Wu Xuan boss guide: break the guard bar, not his health in-game character art

Wu Xuan takes no real damage until his guard bar breaks. Parry the blue glint finishers, block the ordinary strings, dodge the arm grab, then execute the opening.

FAQ

Where is Wu Xuan in Phantom Blade Zero?
Pengzhen, at the back-street archway. Climb the staircase to the top and the fight triggers there — it is the second main boss of The Heart's Trail.
Why does Wu Xuan take no damage?
Because his guard bar is still up. Direct attacks barely scratch him until the bar breaks. Guard damage — perfect parries, high guard-break weapons and Phantom Edges — is what actually progresses the fight.
How many phases does Wu Xuan have?
Two. Phase two starts after his guard breaks the first time: purple flames, higher damage, explosive AoE on some attacks, homing projectiles, and two new strings that both end on a blue glint parry.
What does Wu Xuan drop?
Wolfjaw, a heavy weapon reward, plus story progression through Pengzhen.

Getting there

Push the Pengzhen story to the back-street archway and climb the staircase to the top. The fight triggers at the landing.

The guard bar is the health bar

His health does not move while that bar is up. Attacking into it directly gets you almost nothing, which is why this fight feels like hitting a wall for the first minute.

Two ways to drain it, and they stack:

  • Perfect parries — the fastest guard damage in the game, and the reason this fight rewards reading his strings.
  • Blocking — each blocked hit takes a chunk off. Slow, but it means a defensive player still makes progress.
  • High guard-break weapons and Phantom Edges — the passive third channel.

When it breaks you get a fatal strike and a long opening. One full cycle is roughly half his health bar, so two clean breaks finish the fight.

The parryable finishers

Three strings, all ending on a blue glint — these are your Ghoststep counters and your main guard damage.

Move Shape
Shovel swings Short wind-up, vertical chain, blue on the last hit
Grinding mace to heavy swing Spins the mace, then a parryable horizontal sweep
Rapid slams Ground slam, then three fast overheads, blue on the third

The pattern is consistent: the glint is always the finisher, never the opener. That gives you the whole string to set your timing.

The unblockables

Move Read
Four-hit combo Two horizontal, two vertical — the last one is unblockable
Arm swing Spin and grab at close range, fast

The four-hit combo is fair: the unblockable is at the end, so you can block everything before it. The arm swing is the one that kills — it is a fast close-range grab with almost no warning, and the answer is a dodge, not a parry.

Phase 2: purple flames

Phase two starts the first time his guard breaks and he recovers. He comes back wreathed in purple flames: more damage, explosive AoE on some hits, and homing projectiles added to his kit.

Two new strings, both still parry-finished:

New move Shape
Purple explosions into cyclone swings Leaps to centre, two dodgeable shockwaves, then horizontal swings ending blue
Tactical tantrum Throws himself down and flails — the second circular swing is the blue glint parry

Gear

Slot Pick Why
Main weapon High guard-break Passive guard damage between parries
Phantom Edge Dread Axe or Iron Gauntlets Both are guard-bar tools first
Defence Parry the finishers, dodge the grab Two different answers, do not mix them
Avoid Trading into the guard bar It returns nothing

Rewards

Wolfjaw — a heavy weapon that suits the guard-break playstyle this fight forces you to learn.

Notes

  • His health bar is a lie until the guard bar breaks.
  • Parry the finisher, not the string. The glint is always last.
  • The arm grab is a dodge. Parrying it does not work.
  • One break ≈ half his health. Two cycles ends it.
  • Phase 2 keeps the same grammar. Glint at the end, always.
